A new local government area
The Gladstone Region is a Queensland local government area. It was formed on 15 March 2008. The change followed a July 2007 report by the Local Government Reform Commission. The Local Government Reform Act 2007 (Qld) gives the council its legal standing. The new local government area is located in Central Queensland. It takes in 10,484 square kilometres (4,048 sq mi).
The three former areas
The new local government area took in three former areas. The City of Gladstone was one. The Shire of Calliope was another. The Shire of Miriam Vale was the third. The report recommended no wards for the new local government area. It recommended that the new local government area elect eight councillors and a mayor.
The Gladstone name
The region takes its name from William Ewart Gladstone. He served as British Chancellor of the Exchequer and later as prime minister. The name was given to the local government area created in 2008. The former City of Gladstone was one of the three areas that made up the new region.
